Free Ebook for Authors

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

I have a gift for you, oh faithful blog followers. I’m ready to launch my new ebook, The Author’s Repair Kit—featuring the post-publication book proposal. This 27-page book is designed to help you revive a faltering book and increase sluggish book sales. Just request this book by name—The Author’s Repair Kit—and it’s yours. Offer expires April 20, 2008.

Watch this blog for similar offers in the future.

What do I want in return? Your feedback. I’d like you to comment on the book and offer your suggestions for making it more useful. Also, I’d love to know what topics you’re interested in. I plan to do more ebooks and you can help me decide on the most pertinent topics. I don’t know about you, but I like my ebooks brief. So I’m planning to create ebooks on narrowly targeted topics. They could be considered small books or expanded articles.

The other thing I’d like in return for the free ebook is your recommendation. Tell your friends, colleagues, writers’ group members and other authors you might meet along the way about this ebook and suggest that they order it for only $5.95 at: http://www.matilijapress.com/author_repairkit.html

The only way I can continue to offer you the free blog, access to my enormous array of articles and benefit of my knowledge is to sell books, ebooks and my services, and I appreciate your help with this.

The economy is careening downward again. Those of us with any age under our belts have seen it before, right? Things get bad and then they get better. Once we feel as though we’re getting ahead big time, the economy goes in the toilet again. So how are you handling it? How is this affecting your writing? Are you writing more in an attempt to stay afloat? Or are you writing less because you don’t believe that your writing work can support you?

Yesterday I suggested that you submit articles and stories to magazines and newsletters in order to help build your author’s platform. Did you know that you can also get paid for articles and stories? Yes, many publications pay anywhere from $25 to $3,000 per piece. This could be a good way for you to keep writing even during this economic downturn. Order my book, A Writer’s Guide to Magazine Articles http://www.matilijapress.com/writingpage.html

Don’t use the economy as an excuse not to write. Sure, you may have to set your book-in-progress aside or work on it fewer hours per day while you pursue paying work. And you probably can’t come up with enough money to support yourself by promoting one or two books, especially if you haven’t been putting in a lot of promotional effort over the last several months. But you can survive this period of poor economy through your writing if you are persistent, diligent, creative, patient and trusting.

The Author’s Repair Kit

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I’m still in Nashville experiencing the southern culture, history and food. This was my first introduction to a Cracker Barrel restaurant. Tasty and filling. We walked back in time yesterday as we toured the Ole Opry Museum. Last night, we had a most moving experience sitting on the plush red velvet bench seats in the balcony at the Grand Ole Opry watching some of country’s best stars perform from the famous circle on the stage floor.

This is my last day of play—it’s back to work tomorrow at the PMA Publishers’ Affiliate Retreat at the Marriott Vanderbilt. I’m looking forward to connecting with the other publishing organization affiliates from throughout the U.S. to discuss what we can do to help and support independent publishers. Hopefully, I will report some good news from the retreat.

In the meantime, if your book is faltering or failing in the marketplace, be sure to order your copy of The Author’s Repair Kit NOW. This is a $5.95 ebook. http://www.matilijapress.com/author_repairkit.html

My New Ebook is Here

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

The Author’s Repair Kit, Heal Your Publishing Mistakes and Breathe New Life Into Your Book is here. Well, it has been here for a few weeks, but it wasn’t available, yet. But my webmaster has added it to my array of books for purchase at my website. Go to http://www.matilijapress.com/author_repairkit.html

The 27-page ebook sells for $5.95. Since my website automatically charges you $2.00 for books ordered, we’ve set the purchase price of the book at $3.95 and when the computer adds the $2.00 shipping price, you’re paying the correct amount of $5.95. Works for me!

Who will be helped by this book? Those authors with books that are stalled, faltering or failing in the marketplace. If your book isn’t selling as well as you would like, try writing a post-publication book proposal. The Author’s Repair Kit shows you how.

I’m still here in Nashville, but I can send your copy of this ebook from here. So go ahead and order your copy today.

Last night, I spoke on publishing at Borders in Nashville and had an amazing reception. Wow! Talk about southern hospitality. About 20 authors and hopeful authors came out to hear me and to buy books. Sales were brisk and I met some great folks. Enjoyable evening.

I have a few days off before attending the PMA Publishers’ Retreat at the Marriott here in Nashville. I’m looking forward to getting acquainted with the city.

New eBook Coming for Struggling Authors

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Did I tell you I’m working on a new book? I’m calling it “The Author’s Repair Kit.” It will be designed to pull struggling, stalled, discouraged authors out of the quagmire. This book features my invention: the post-publication book proposal. It will provide the tools and techniques to redirect the wayward author toward a more successful outcome for his or her book.

I plan this as an ebook. I’ll offer it for sale at my website http://www.matilijapress.com and it will also be offered as a free gift to new and renewing members of SPAWN.

You’ll learn how to change the face (and the sales figures) of a bulldozer book, how to sell more copies of your memoir, how to bring the same book out with a new cover, how to increase book sales by simply changing your mind about the book and so much more.

If your book sales are lagging and you don’t know what to do about it, watch this blog for my new book announcement. I expect to complete this project in March, before heading to Atlanta to present the book proposal seminar and then on to Nashville to speak at Borders. Check out my Calendar of Events for 2008 at http://www.matilijapress.com/activities.htm

I’d like to produce additional ebooks on various topics of interest to authors and freelance writers. Please send me your topic suggestions. PLFry620@yahoo.com

Is Your Book Idea Really a Good Idea?

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Is your book idea really a good idea? Are you sure? Just because the concept is new and exciting to you doesn’t mean that it is a truly fresh idea—that it hasn’t been done before.

It’s easy to get a book published today. Sure, you can produce a book on any topic, in any style and from any perspective. But it still doesn’t mean that it is a good book—a needed or worthwhile project. In fact, folks, I’m seeing more and more manuscripts that probably should never become books.

Before you get too excited about your great book idea, Stop, Look and Listen.

Stop and think about your topic or your story. Is it really different enough and still within the realm of what readers need/want? Here’s where the Market Analysis portion of the traditional book proposal comes in. The process of completing a comparison study of books like the one you have in mind will help you to answer this question before your book becomes another failed book.

Look at books like yours. Okay, there’s nothing out there like yours. You keep telling me that. Then, perhaps you’re wasting your time writing a book for which there is no established category or interest. Hmmmmmm????!!!! Now that I’ve, hopefully, made an important point, I want you to go to the area in a nearby mega-bookstore where your book might be shelved. Order a latte, because you’ll be there for a while.

With your eyes, scan the books in this section. Are there any titles similar to yours or that suggest books on your topic or storyline? Maybe your book focuses on the power of attitude and how changing your mind can change your life. This might be a new concept for you, but I’m pretty sure that you’ll find a plethora of books new and ancient by a wide variety of authors known and unknown on the shelf. Perhaps your thriller features a swamp ogre that won’t die, but you find that dozens of other books in this genre do, too.

Sure it’s discouraging to discover that your clever idea is nothing new, but it’s also a blessing. It’s something you want to know before you ever start writing your book. Why? So that you don’t go down the wrong path that so many other new authors take—so that you don’t write a book that’s destined to fail.

Once you gather the information you need about your competition, Listen to your logical voice. Hopefully, your voice—and the professionals you trust—are telling you, “Don’t quit. Regroup and rethink your project.”

Study your competition thoroughly. Scrutinize dozens of books. Continue your comparison work online and don’t forget to look at similar books in your home library.

Maybe you’ll discover that, while there are plenty of books by well-qualified authors on your topic, there are none featuring real stories of famous people experiencing epiphanies in their lives. Or perhaps there’s a need for a workbook.

You might find a way to give your thriller a reprieve through a really unique storyline. Bring your most creative friends together for a brainstorming session and see what you can come up with. Whatever it is, be sure to use the Stop, Look and Listen technique before committing your story to paper.

It has been said for thousands of years, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” But, as authors, we can tweak our ideas and stories in ways that, perhaps, haven’t been done before—or at least in recent years—or at least in a particular genre or topic…

New Book Getting Great Reviews

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

I practiced what I preach. As soon as my revised, 2nd edition book, The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book, was a book, I sent notices to key reviewers. Key reviewers for this book include editors of writing/publishing-related magazines and newsletters, appropriate site hosts, important book review sites and other influential reviewers within the writing/publishing community.

The book debuted in October and already we’ve received 4 amazingly complimentary reviews. James Cox at the Midwest Book Review says: “The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book by Patricia L. Fry continues to be an ideal single-volume introduction to writing and getting published whether your literary project is fiction or nonfiction.” James also “very highly recommends” the Author’s Workbook. Read the entire review at http://www.midwestbookreview.com/ibw/nov_07.htm#writ
Scroll down to the 4th review.

Barbara Florio Graham at http://www.simonteakettle.com reviewed the book and the workbook for SPAWNews ( http://www.spawn.org) as well as for several other sites and publications. She says, “This is the book to buy if you think you might want to write a book, if you need guidance in finding a publisher and writing a book proposal or if you’re considering self-publishing, It belongs on every writer’s bookshelf.” She says, “I reviewed the first edition of this book and said then that it was one of the most comprehensive and valuable sources I’ve encountered. I recommend it to most of the writers I mentor. The new edition contains even more helpful advice and resources and the companion workbook is ideal for someone who needs additional motivation.”

Tami Brady at TMC Reviews http://www.tcm-ca.com/reviews/2042.html says, “I felt that this author is more of a mentor. I got the distinct feeling that she felt that every book should be allowed to show its best possible face even if it wasn’t destined to be on the bestseller list. I really appreciated that.”

Norm Goldman at Book Pleasures http://www.bookpleasures.com writes, “Fry has an excellent sense of what makes the world of publishing tick and her material is mixed with extensive research, priceless advice and anecdotes. This thoughtfully constructed book will hold much appeal for anyone contemplating becoming an author or for those who have published but don’t understand why their book is not selling.”

We’re excited about the positive reviews and eager for the additional 2 dozen to come in. We’ll keep you posted.

Keep an eye on the book page at my website to read the full content of these reviews and for additional reviews. http://www.matilijapress.com/rightway.html

Authors Should Strive to Learn Something New Every Day

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Are you always in learning mode? I like to think that I am. Here, I share some of the information bites I learned this week. Read all the way through the great book promotion idea for military books and the good news that bar code prices are decreasing to some rather shocking publishing statistics. For example, did you know that, while the number of published authors has increased around three-fold during the last decade, an incredibly huge number of books have gone out-of-print? Keep reading:

1. A military reunion is an excellent place to sell military-related books. I talked to an author at the Ventura Book Festival Saturday who said he sells hundreds of his WWII airplane books when he takes them to such reunions.
2. The price of bar codes is coming down. This is probably due to the fact that you can now buy software designed to create your own bar codes. I was sure I paid $30 for a bar code last year and the same company charged me only $11 this time around. Some companies offer a free bar code if you spring for some of their other services. Can anyone recommend a good software for creating bar codes?
3. Not every printing establishment, no matter what they may say up front, has the same level of communication with its customers. Give me a printing company with communicative, responsive employees any day over one with nicey, nicey upfront salespeople who disappear once payment is received. (Some of you would say the same thing about fee-based POD publishing services, wouldn’t you?)
4. How many books do you think have gone out of print? According to the folks at Bookfinder.com, somewhere between 98 and 99 percent of all books ever published are currently out of print.
5. In 1993, it was estimated that 81 percent of all Americans believed they had a book in them. Today, the number of adults actually producing books has tripled.

I’ve been discussing publishing with hopeful authors while wo/manning the SPAWN booth at book festivals for about 10 years. I was aware that the number of people who come to talk about their pending or potential publishing projects had increased and I guestimated that increase to be about threefold. I based this on the condition of my throat after speaking over the din at a busy book festival for 6 or 8 hours. I notice that I arrive home from book events in a more exhausted, but exhilarated state than ever before. Also, I’m selling more books and we’re signing up more SPAWN members at these events.

This week, I conducted research and learned that my figure is probably fairly accurate. I found that there are:
• 3 times more books being published now than in 1993.
• 3 times more children’s books being published now than in 1993.
• 4 times more fiction books being published now than in 1993.

Unfortunately, readership is not increasing at anywhere near the same rate. In fact, statistics show that it may be declining. I’ll explore the issue of readers versus reading material in the October edition of the SPAWN Market Update, posted October 1 in the member area of the SPAWN Web site. Join SPAWN at www.spawn.org.

I need your help:
• If you know where to find additional statistics reflecting the increase in published books and the decrease in readers, let me know.
• Are you aware of any good programs designed to encourage adults to read?
• Have you come up with or read about any solutions to the over-production of books and/or disinterest in the written word.

Plfry620@yahoo.com

By the way, in an attempt to offer a solution—hopefully, not add to the problem—I’ve revised my hallmark book, The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book. It is scheduled to debut toward the end of September, 2007. Order your copy at the prepublication DISCOUNT price through September 20, 2007, only. http:www.matilijapress.com/rightway.html And be sure to order the Author’s Workbook, which is designed to accompany The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book.

As you’ll notice, there are 4 ordering options.

(The discount offers are good through September 20, 2007 only.)

Some of you are going to ask, “Why would I buy the second edition if I already have the first edition in my library?” Good question. Here’s my response:

While the 2007 version of The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book is basically the same book as the 2006 edition and, while you can use the original book quite effectively for years to come, the revised second edition includes important updates and concepts that the first edition doesn’t have. Plus, the Author’s Workbook, while it can be successfully used with the first edition, is specifically designed to accompany the second edition. Below I list 20 changes and additions you’ll find in the second edition:

• There’s more information for authors in all categories of fiction.
• There are a total of 25 Index entries for authors of poetry and children’s books.
• We offer more assistance to help you write a book proposal for fiction.
• We’ve expanded the section on promoting fiction.
• You’ll learn how to build promotion into your novel.
• We include tips for novelists and children’s book authors who want to appear on radio and TV.
• We explain how to establish your platform and we provide examples.
• We’ve added information about promoting through book “trailers” or videos.
• We explain how to sell books through your blog.
• We provide information about fulfillment services.
• We’ve updated industry information (fees, contact numbers, etc.).
• We’ve updated and added new industry statistics.
• There are 27 new entries in the Resource Directory, now giving you 212 resources.
• We recommend several new books, including two books on how to make money with your poetry and one that rates fee-based POD “self-publishing” companies.
• We’ve listed more subheadings in the Table of Contents for easier access to the sections you seek.
• We’ve developed a more useful, more complete Index by expanding it from 9 pages to 16.
• We provide some unexpected and highly useful references on key publishing topics and issues.
• We give you the tools to check sales figures on any book in Ingram’s database.
• The book is packaged with a more appealing cover.
AND THE MOST EXCITING ADDITION OF ALL…
• We’ve designed a workbook to accompany the revised second edition.

The Changing Face of Publishing

Friday, June 8th, 2007

I’ve been almost totally immersed, lately, in revising my book, The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book. As some of you know, I’m planning to release the second edition (revised) in August. This has been an enlightening and educational experience, as the publishing industry continues to shift, transition and change.

I pride myself on keeping a finger on the pulse of the industry, but I’m always astonished to learn what’s new in the world of publishing. Here are just some of the changes and additions I’ve become aware of in recent months:

1: Anyone can access Ingram’s database to get bookstore sales figures on any book that’s in their system. I actually knew about this, but had never dialed the number. I’ve recently discovered, however, that it is easy to use and most enlightening. Use it in the following ways:

*Check on sales for competing titles when preparing your book proposal.
*Find out how your colleagues’ books are doing.

I was surprised to learn that my writing/publishing-related books are selling more through non-bookstore markets than many of my competitors’ books are selling through bookstores.

Here’s the number—have fun and let me know how you used this service and what you found out: plfry620@yahoo.com.

Call: 615-213-6803. (You’ll need the ISBN for books that you are checking.)

2: Over 76 percent of books in America sold fewer than 100 copies in 2004. Wow! The next highest category didn’t even come close. Just over 16 percent of books sold as many as 100 to 999 copies that year. And the higher the number of sales, the lower the number of titles in that category. Do you want to know how many titles sold a million copies or more in 2004? 10! That’s it, 10.

3: There are over 1.2 million books in print and the largest mega bookstore carries only 150,000 titles. Yes, only a mere 12.5 percent of books in print are sold through bookstores.

4: I have just discovered Google Alerts (www.google.com/alerts). Sign up to receive information about your book topic or genre. Or ask Google to send you alerts related to your own book, name and/or publishing company. What a great way to find out what the competition is doing and where your articles, interviews, book reviews, etc. are showing up on the Internet.

5: More and more traditional royalty publishers are stating in their Author’s Guidelines that they expect you to promote your own book.

6: Book videos (or trailers) really are the latest in book promotion and they are being shown at My Space, YouTube, movie theaters, cable TV and art centers as well as on the authors’ Web sites. Simon and Schuster plans to launch a new site for book trailers. Watch for Video Channel.

7: I discovered a new online book festivals directory: http://www.loc.gov/loc/cfbook/bookfair.html

8: The first three Espresso Book Machines are being tested. They are programmed to print and bind a 300-page book in three minutes. You can choose from 200 titles.

All of this is included in the revision of The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book along with about 100 additional new and updated information bites and resources.

I’ve also added dozens of suggestions and resources specifically for novelists, children’s book authors and other fiction writers.

You’ll find information about fulfillment companies.

And I’ve included the word platform in the index with 10 entries.

Exciting, isn’t it?

But wait. There’s still time to put in your two cents. Is there something you missed seeing in the original version that you’d like to see in the revision? Let me know: plfry620@yahoo.com

One customer asked for more about bookstore consignment agreements. It’s now in there.

Oh yes, and I’m also working on a workbook to go along with the revision of The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book.

We’re busy here at Matilija Press this spring. But never too busy to hear from you.

Here’s the best news, yet: I’m offering a 20% discounts for two categories of customers:
*Those of you who purchased the first edition.
*New customers who order and pay for the new revision before August 1, 2007.

The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book (revised second edition) will sell for $19.95. If you qualify for a discount, your cost will be $15.96 (plus shipping and CA state tax, where applicable.)

What’s New at Matilija Press

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Whew! I’ve been busy this month and my blog is suffering. I know that some of you visit my publishing blog weekly and expect to see new entries. Somehow I’ve managed to post a new entry practically every week for a year and a half. That’s a lot of blogging.

I’ve blogged from Dubai, San Francisco and Wisconsin. I’ve blogged when it’s storming, when it’s unbearably hot, when I’m in a good mood and when I’m stressed. I’ve blogged when I’m fresh and alert and when I’m exhausted and I’ve tried to always share something of value to authors.

But this month, the time has slipped away as I’ve worked with my wonderful and talented clients, taught my online courses, cleaned up my yard after winter, planted a spring garden, kept up with my tasks as the pres. of SPAWN, helped out my 86-year-old mom, traveled (twice in April) AND I am also revising my book, The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book. Yup, I’ll be coming out with a revised second edition this summer.

I’m blown away by the multitude of changes in the publishing industry since I wrote this book at the end of 2005. Publishers have gone out of business, they’ve changed their publishing focus, costs for copyright and other services have gone up, distributors have gone under, magazines have adopted new policies, there are some new opportunities for authors and some have gone away… I can see the value in producing ebooks and pursuing print on demand for books like mine so one can keep them up to date.

There are also some terms that I didn’t include in my first edition—such as platform. While the concept is there, I didn’t use the buzzword, platform, in the first edition. The publishing field is even more competitive than it was eighteen months ago, when I put the final touches on the first edition of The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book, so I am adding even more tips, techniques and ideas for the author as we approach the two thousand-teens.

Here’s your chance, my dear friends and colleagues, to be a part of the publishing community through participation in this popular book. Most of you have read The Right Way to Write, Publish and Sell Your Book. What would you like to see me add, delete or expand on? Send me your requests this week: plfry620@yahoo.com. And don’t forget to visit my Web site. Why? Sign up for an online course. I’m pretty much teaching these courses on demand these days. Inevitably, there are people who don’t sign up on time and I’ll let them take the course on their schedule. Interesting concept.

Also at my site, you can buy any number of books—have you checked out my friend’s book, Johanna’s Journey? It’s a tear-jerker. You’ll find my story about inheriting four cats in this book—Johanna’s Journey. It’s a good read. I’ve also written a book featuring my trip to and the culture/history of Dubai (in the Middle East). At my site, you can read articles on a variety of subjects—mainly, of course, writing and publishing. And, if you’re seeking a publishing or writing resource, check out my large resource list. http://www.matilijapress.com

Happy Writing.
