January 2nd is designated as Happy Mew Year—or a day to once again acknowledge the beloved cat. Here are some ideas for celebrating Happy Mew Year with your cat: Sing cat-related songs such as those from the play/movie, Cats, or “What’s New Pussycat?” or “Pink Panther.” How about “The Siamese Song?” Remember this song in Lady and the Tramp? (I am Siamese, if you please…) You could read your cat a cat-related book—a Klepto Cat Mystery or Calico Cat Mystery or nursery rhymes—“Three Little Kittens Have Lost Their Mittens.”
Make resolutions involving your cat or other cats—plan a visit to your veterinarian if it’s been a while since you’ve done so. Visit a cat café. Donate or volunteer at a local cat shelter.
This is also Pet Travel Safety Day and a good time to discover the best way to keep your cat safe should you need to transport her. It could happen. Surely, you take her to the veterinarian when called for and for annual checkups. What if you have to evacuate because of fire or flood (I did once with two cats), or you plan to move to a new location? (I’ve done that with cats, too.) Maybe your cat simply enjoys a car ride.
Tips: Use a crash-tested pet crate and buckle it into the backseat of your car. Look into car seats for cats and follow the directions for using it. This will most likely mean getting your cat accustomed to wearing a harness. It can be done.
Happy Mew Year everyone. Keep your cat(s) close and safe.
